FA PREMIER ACADEMY LEAGUE
Saturday 30th April 2011
Huddersfield Town 1 Manchester City 1
Hiwula
City recorded their tenth league draw of the season against a Huddersfield Town side that had won its previous four league games against such academy heavy weights as Sunderland, Blackburn, Middlesbrough and Leeds United to lift them off the bottom of the group D table.
A late deserved equalizing goal from Jordi Hiwula from a rebounded, returning Harry Bunn, shot after Huddersfield had taken a first half lead after a mix up in defence.
Huddersfield's ground is a curious location as it is tucked away in a very picturesque setting in Storthes Hall Park that is about five hundred metres away from the changing room facilities.
Despite the pitch having some shelter there is no watering facilities and with all this dry weather recently it made the pitch very uneven and with the strong winds it made playing carpet football almost impossible.
City started well and could have had a penalty in the opening ninety seconds when there was a clumsy challenge in the area but the referee showed his colours straight away indeed he showed many colours; five yellow cards during the match which is unusually high for an academy game.
However against the run of play Huddersfield dispossessed City in midfield and played a really good ball just in front of the defence for the Huddersfield midfielder to run onto and he played the ball to the left of the penalty area and it appeared as though Luke Coulson and goalkeeper Tom Halsall would deal with the ball but neither emerged with it and a shot cannoned into the path of an unmarked Huddersfield player who fired into the empty goal.
That goal gave Huddersfield a little more belief and City failed to create any real clear cut chances for the rest of the half.
The second half was all about the Yorkshire side using spoiling tactics and trying to hit City on the break as they tried to disrupt any momemtum that City may gain. Indeed again City started the half brightly as a ball over from Adam Drury on the right which came over to Lopuis Hutton but his outstretched leg could not quite divert the ball into the corner of the goal.
City made a tactical change with George Evans coming on for Luke Coulson and that seemed to give City some impetus as the u16s player George who has played a lot of the season for the U18s has a real air of quality about him and City slowly began to press the play with a reverse flicked goal by Harry Bunn doubtfully ruled for offside and culminating in a massive goalmouth scramble in the seventy ninth minute where at least four shots were either block or cleared off the line in a real pinball wizard moment; it just did not appear to be City's day.
That was until the eighty seventh minute where again good work by Adam Drury on the right allowed him to send in a cross that Harry Bunn took a touch before firing in that the goalkeeper could only spill out and their was Jordi Hiwula to pounce and fire into the goal.
City pressed for a winner and left themselves exposed to the counter and twice could have conceded another goal but held on to secure yet another draw.
City just have the one final league game which is away to Sunderland which as we stand has not be scheduled yet.
