Sheffield United 1 Manchester City 2
Kennedy 41min
O.G. 90min
As Sheffield United had played their youth cup semi final game earlier in the week against Aston Villa, we were told that they had made nine changes from that starting line up; but wee cannot confirm that as no team sheets were available and so it was quite even in terms of mainly containing first years like City, the team from West of the Pennines however were by far the better side and a Kieran Kennedy goal and a last kick of the game own goal were well deserving for City despite Sheffield United being gifted a lifeline with a penalty at the end of the first half.
City started really well and early, just like the game due to the first team's home Yorkshire derby with Leeds and City nearly replicated a goal from last week in the opening minutes when it all opened up for Adam Drury and he let fly with a shot that went just over the crossbar.
City spent long spells camped in the United half but again without a recognised striker struggled to find that clear cut chance at times because although there were many decent balls coming in across the area there was not always the player to make the run to get in front of the defence.
The breakthrough came at the start of the forty first minute when Alex Henshall made a run down the left and played the ball off the defender and behind for the corner. Bradley Robinson put the inswinging cross into the danger area and the goalkeeper came for it but it was touched on by someone out of his grasp and came to Kieran's lower part of his body and was put in across the line.
Five minutes later and Sheffield United amazingly were level as Courtney Meppen-Walter was trying to see a ball out over the by-line and the United player ran in but Courtney stuck a leg out and just made it easy for him to dive over it and gain an extremely soft and clumsy penalty that was dispatched well past Eirik Johansen.
City were not quite as dominant in the second half but still got in good spaces and put decent balls into the box but it was Johansen that was called into action on a couple of occasions when he had to tip a dipping long range strike over the crossbar and get down quickly when the Sheffield player got in front of Luke Coulson at the near post from a cross from the right.
City continued to press for the winner but it just seemed like it was not going to come yet again and become joint top draw specialists with Coventry but a move from midfield that drifted out to the right came to Bradley Robinson and he cut inside and played a through ball into the box for schoolboy George Evans to run onto and fire from a tight angle across the goal but the defender under pressure from the City players running in only managed to put the ball past the goalkeeper.
With other results going City's way today it has almost guarantee'd a top three position in their group which will be a great achievement for a team that although having the scoring abilities of Harry Bunn earlier in the season are still a group of young players with a that lack of fire power, that will be some force next season if Devante Cole and Jordy Hiwula can fill the attacking void that they have at the minute.
