FA PREMIER ACADEMY LEAGUE
Friday 15th April 2011
Manchester City 1 Wolves 3
Hiwula 76 mins
It was the final home academy of the season and one that had been cancelled on at least three occassions for various reasons.
With City trying to maintain a proud home record of not being beaten at home this season.
It was a lively opening with both sides creating chances, with City being the livelier of the two. Bradley Robinson created a one on one situation with the keeper following a through ball from Adam Drury but a retreating defender forced him to shoot wide. In the next attack the keeper spilled a shot from Alex Henshall but got enough on it to force the ball out for a corner.
Courtney Meppen-Walter had an ideal goal scoring opportunity on 27 minutes, when a Henshall corner fell to him and with what appeared to be an easy finish a Wolves defender get in his way and the ball again went out for a corner.
Just past the half hour mark and the visitors took the lead, their left back Jordan Cranston swung the ball into the box and the number 9, James Spray, rose unchallenged to head past Tom Halsall and put his team in the lead going into the break.
The second half saw a double substitution from City as they looked to claw their way back into the game, Henshall went close with a shot, but poor marking from another corner saw Wolves go two up, courtesy of another Spray header
When Paul Clowes was bundled over in the box it appeared City had been handed a lifeline but Robinson's firmly struck spot kick was well saved by the keeper diving to his left.
City continued to press forward, Meppen -Walter cleared the ball out of defence , to Robinson who flicked the ball onto Jordi Hiwula and the Under 16 striker cooly chipped the ball beyond the advancing keeper to bring City back into the game with fifteen minutes left.
They continued to look for an equaliser but all their endeavour came unstuck in injury time, when Wolves broke away and their number 7, Anthony Forde, had the simple task of placing the ball past Halsall to inflict upon the side their first and only defeat of the season at home.
