FA PREMIER ACADEMY LEAGUE
Saturday 5th February 2011
Liverpool 2 v 1 Manchester City
Henshall 62mins
City were forced into a few changes for their usual starting line up due to various reasons and they never really looked like their usual selves as they slipped up to a defeat for only the second time in the league this season. A fantastic equalizing goal from Alex Henshall against the run of play was cancelled out with a winner from Liverpool in the last ten minutes.
Liverpool were all over City in the first half and had at least three clear chances to score but had to wait till the forty fourth minute to take the lead when a shot across the face of the goal was too much for the impressive James Wood to stop this time.
City's goal came out of nothing when a throw in on the left by George King half way inside Liverpool's half was flicked up and chested away twice by Henshall and as it dropped he played the most delightful volley that looped into the top corner of the goal leaving the goalkeeper on his backside as he attempted the save.
City did start to play better after the goal but still never really tested the Liverpool goalkeeper and so it was no surprise that Liverpool re-took the lead after Wood had pulled off some quite outrageous saves that he had no right to get to but he was beaten with a low firm shot right in the corner of the goal in the eighty second minute.
The day did not turn out as bad as thought as Everton also lost; but their opponents Bolton move to within a point of City and other teams winning means a bunching up behind City and Everton at the top.
