Newcastle United 1 Manchester City 0

(Behind closed doors)

With Newcastle sitting at the top of the league and City only a point behind with games in hand, the real prospect of watching an exciting game was spoiled when this fixture was switched from its original venue and deemed to be a behind closed doors game at Newcastles training ground.

With no confirmation forthcoming from Newcastle, we did not risk travelling to the North-East with the possibility of being turned away. So this report comes courtesy of Newcastles web site

A goal midway through the second half was enough to give the home side victory. Sammy Ameobis corner on 72 minutes was met by a majestic header at the far post from Leon Best, it however was blocked on the line and substitute Matthew Grieve forced the ball over the line from close range.

City enjoyed good spells of play in the second half and keeper Soderberg was busy in the opening exchanges keeping out efforts from John Guidetti and Andrew Tutte.

Tom Smith went close on 77 minutes with a 25 yard shot that just went wide of the post and a minute later Guidetti had an ideal opportunity to equalise but skied his shot over the bar following good work by Kelvin Etuhu on the flanks.

The plus factors to come from this game were the re-appearances of Alex Nimely and Tom Smith following long term injuries.

Next up for City is a home fixture against Manchester United.
