A friendly fixture against Blackburn Rovers was the opening game of 2013 for City's Under 21 side.
The afternoon fixture at City's Platt Lane complex, saw the inclusion of a big name star from the first team and a Japanese Trialist
City romped to a comfortable 4-0 win with all the goals coming in the second half, the opening two came from Mario Balotelli, who then spurned the opportunity to claim a hat trick from the spot, when he offered the ball to Japanese trialist ,Hideki Ishige, after Albert Rusnak had been fouled in the box, His initial effort was saved but he followed up to get his name on the score sheet. It had been a quiet opening for the dimunitive Japanese star but he came more into the game as it progressed and is probably in our opinion worth a second look.
The fourth goal also came from the penalty spot, after Mario had been fouled and again he declined the opportinity allowing Denis Suarez to convert with ease
Other positives from the game were the return of Kieran Kennedy and Louis Hutton from injury
