Stoke City 0 Manchester City 1

Bunn 31 mins

A fine solo strike by the prolific Harry Bunn was enough to give City's academy side the win in their first fixture of 2011 over bottom of the table Stoke City.

Frederic Veseli could have doubled City's advantage in the second half but his finely struck shot from just inside the box hit the cross bar and cannoned away to safety

The first game for both academy teams in a fair while showed in their rustiness as the play was a little disjointed. However it was City that looked to take an early lead when a corner was not fully cleared and Meppen-Walters hit a great volley to goal that was well saved by the Stoke goalkeeper.

City took the lead just after the half hour mark when Harry Bunn received the ball on about the half way line with his back to goal and he turned and took on virtually the whole Stoke team as he surged towards the penalty area where he found himself in space and he fired the ball in and it appeared to deflect of the underside of the goalkeeper and into the back of the goal.

The second half saw Stoke try to press for an exqualizer and on other occasions they would have done so as poor finishing cost them the chance.

City looked like they were rather harshly done to midway through the second half when Alex Henshall was tripped in the area and the referee failed to award the penalty.

Harry Bunn again found it in himself to take on many Stoke players in the Stoke corner and got himself into the area but there was  no finish this time.

That result puts City to within two points of leaders Everton who now have a game in hand on City.
