Manchester City 1 West Brom 0

Kennedy(74)

Today's game was all about keeping it tight and not conceding after that septimana horribilis last week at Manchester United and with Kieran kennedy back in the back four and feeling more himself after his bout of illness that was likely to be the case and so it proved as Kieran put the icing on the cake with a winning goal for his side.

Given also that City slipped to their first defeat of the season away to West Bromwich in a rather flattering four one score line; City clearly wanted some revenge for that defeat.

City fielded probably one of their youngest team as they had seven first year scholars in the starting line up and second years who have not been offered a pro contract as Harry Bunn and Joan Roman-Angel have made the permanent swith to Carrington barring unusual circumstances.

The game was not a classic that will be remembered over time as neither side created too much but certainly in the first half the West Bromwich goalkeeper Shane Lewis was definitely the busier as City delivered decent balls into the area from free kicks and quite a few corners.

However City had a golden chance to break the deadlock when a good passing flowing move resulted in George King making a run from midfield to split the defence after receiving a great through ball to be left one on one with Lewis but he was quick off his line and spread himself well to deny King.

The start of the second half and City did not really let up the pressure although West Bromwich did play slightly better. Again City nearly took the lead when Bradley Robinson found himself in a bit of space to run into and let fly a powerful shot that went just wide of the left hand post.

City were able to take the lead when Adam Drury was fouled out on the left side and Robinson delivered an inswinging cross and there was Kieran Kennedy to finish coolly inside the six yard box after he had tried a rather audacious overhead half volley in the first half.

City dropped a bit deeper after the few changes than perhaps they should have done and invited more pressure than they would have liked and indeed in the final minute of the ninety a ball came in from West Bromwich's right side and was headed on towards the far post which missed their player running on also as it went inches wide of the far post.

All in all a fairly decent result given that City were without five regular starters who mainly have a great deal of experience at this level. Next week is the top of the table clash away to Everton at their newly developed first team Finch Farm training ground.
