FA PREMIER RESERVE LEAGUE
Tuesday 19th October 2010
Wigan Athletic 2 Manchester City 0
City's first defeat of the league season came about with conceding two goals either side of half time at Wigan's Robin Park arena by Mauro Boselli and cousin of Steve McManaman; Callum. The game also saw City fail to score for the first time in ten games stretching back to the pre-season friendly games.
I think the problem in this game for City was that John Guidetti did not look fully fit returning from his injury he suffered at West Brom a few weeks ago and the team without both James Poole and Donal McDermott lacked that creativity to get into and behind the Wigan defence.
Even though City's team only contained two players over the age of twenty one; that as never really been a problem for City in the past but with City only playing Guidetti up front on his own against the experienced Gary Caldwell; City were up against it.
The two goals came about when son of former City player; Steve Redmond, Daniel crossed the ball from the left and into the area that goalkeeper David Gonzalez should have dealt with but Boselli was left with a free header into the goal into the eighth minute.
Wigan's second goal came when the experienced midfielder Ben watson played a forward ball to McManaman and he pushed on into the area before cutting inside and firing the ball into the far corner of the goal past the out stretched leg of Gonzalez.
City were only once able to force a good save from Wigan's goalkeeper Lee Nicholls in the twenty eighth minute when good work by Guidetti down the right led to the cross coming in and eventually falling to Chris Chantler and Nicholls reacted well to Chis' shot.
Next up for City is again Wigan Athletic away at the Robin Park arena with an afternoon kick off in the Lancashire Senior cup with it being a straight knockout competion unlike the Manchester Senior cup and so there will be a positive result either way on the day. It is the same as the Manchester in that it goes straight to penalties after ninety minutes if its a draw.
