Witton Albion 3 Manchester City Youth 3
12th August 2009
This was without doubt a game of two halves, City were comfortably leading three goals to the good, until a raft of second half substitutions saw the balance sway in the favour of Witton, who fought back with three goals in seven minutes to earn a creditable draw.
There was a familiar figure in goal for Witton, with Joe Clegg making an appearance for the home side having just signed for them following his release by City.
He was soon called into action when heroically diving to his right to keep out Kieran Trippier’s free kick. However he could do nothing about City’s first goal on 25 minutes. John Guidetti knocked down Trippier’s ball into the box, for Jack Redshaw to steady himself and fire his side into a deserved lead.
Ahmad Benali swept the ball home on 35 minutes to double City’s lead following an intelligent little flick/back heel by Guidetti and then Clegg denied Redshaw when through on goal.
City’s third goal came on 62 minutes when Redshaw converted from the spot after Omar Elabdellaoui had been bundled to the ground
This spurred the home side into a remarkable comeback. Steve Foster knocked one over James Wood on 74 minutes, despite the young keeper’s valiant efforts to try and prevent the ball crossing the line. Peter Heler then tussled Reece Wabara off the ball to score Wittons second of the night and if things could not get worse Tom Smith was brushed aside by Foster on 81 minutes to complete the scoring on the night.
