Wolverhampton Wanderers 0 v 1 Manchester City
King 87'
Another late late show for City with a goal by substitute George King who starred in Soccer AM's Skill School last week, to nick all three points for the acedemy side that have lost only one game since the start of their pre-season.
Prior to today's game you would have to say that the organisation of City's defence had not been the best as the players were clearly learning about each others strengths as there are two first years and two second years in the back four.
However today's defensive performance showed that they are working much more like an organised unit and in particular Kieran Kennedy stood out with some fine late challenges and blocks. Also goalkeeper James Wood looked far more assured as he made the right decisions for when to come for the ball.
In a mirror image to City; the Wolverhampton defence was also well organised as it was difficult to break them down and City were not able to create much in the first half to trouble Wolves. The only real effort that either side had in the first half was a free header from a Wolves' corner that went just over the crossbar.
The second half was a bit more open as in the fifty seventh minute the ball manoeuvered its way across the box before falling nicely to their number nine who had a free shot but fortunately for City he sliced it wide of the post.
Half an hour in to the second half and captain Harry Bunn was able to get clear of the defence but his powerful shot was goalbound but the goalkeeper managed to get some part of his body on the ball and it skimmed just wide of the far post of the goal.
Then a key point of the game because again Wolves were able to get City chasing the ball in and around the box before finding the young Serbian player; Zele Ismail out on the right and he cut inside and fired a strong low shot into the bottom near post that Wood reacted really well to and got down very quickly to deny Zele and push the ball away for a corner.
That save meant that when Kim Skogsrud released Luke Coulson on the right he saw Adam Drury make a run and played an inch perfect pass to him as he beat the full back for pace and sent a cross in across the face of goal and there was George King to put the ball in the goal from a narrow angle.
Knowing that Everton beat United at their Finch Farm venue today City are now only one or two points behind the group leaders going into the half term break with group whipping boys Stoke next up for City at Platt Lane at the end of October.
